Divorce Survival Guide - For the Over 50-s

August 11, 2008

There are a number if reasons why married couples remained with each other.

Society looked at the individuals as failures if their marriage broke up and therefore stayed together as a result. Apart from the media, much of the stigma of divorce came from family, friends and peers.

Today, more and more people are living longer and therefore the chance of ‘going it along’ has increased. The over 50’s age bracket in particular has seen the divorce rates over the pas ten years. It is  this age bracket that the children  have grown up and left home. It is this age bracket that the mortgage has been paid off so less financial burden. It is this age bracket that people have seen a change in Government  Family policy favouring non-married couples and therefore encouraged divorce. It is this age bracket that the over-50’s seek a long and happy retirement.

A major concern for many (especially women) was financial security. Especially for women, because they tended to do part-time work and were the main child carers. To get divorce would mean that many people would be financially worse off. This  was mainly to due to Government Family policy supporting ‘the family’ as opposed to singles.

In the past many married couples remained together because of the children. A broken family was not acceptable for many people so therefore couples did not divorce. Children in a way brought the two married parents together and with this came an outward happiness but for many bitter unhappiness inside. Not necessarily unhappy with the children but with their significant other or circumstance.
